My research interest has focused on factors that contribute to osteoporosis and the osteoprotective effects of the bioactive components in plant-based foods. This work has progressed along two major lines of scientific investigation. First, we have studied how low grade inflammation contributes to systemic skeletal deterioration and the extent to which these alterations share similarities with those observed in aging and type II diabetes. These laboratory-based studies have provided the scientific foundation for clinical trials such as the ongoing study designed to examine the influence of inflammation, body composition and type II diabetes on osteoporosis risk in Native American women. Second, our work has focused on the development of nutritional treatment strategies through our efforts to identify the bioactive compounds found in dried plums and the unique mechanisms by which these compounds reverse bone loss. The overarching goal of this research program is to utilize a translational research approach to better understand how inflammation and oxidative stress negatively impact bone metabolism; and to use this information to develop effective osteoporosis treatment strategies. All of these research endeavors impact my instructional efforts in the area of nutrition, chronic disease and aging.
