Amanda Harrist, Human Development and Family Science Associate Professor and Bryan Close Professor, was selected for a Service-Learning Incentive Grant Award for the spring 2009 semester. Her grant is titled “Less is More: Developing a Local and Global Community-based Service Program Based on the Human Ecological Model”.  Students will develop a service project that will allow local restaurants to serve half-portions of their entrées and donate half the cost of the entrée to an African food bank.

Amanda Harrist was also accepted as a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University’s Centre for Family Research.

Ron Cox, Jan Johnston, both HDFS Assistant Professors and Extension specialists, and Kami Schwerdtfeger, HDFS Assistant Professor in Marriage & Family Therapy, were awarded a grant proposal for “Hispanic Children and Youth Needs Assessment”.

Kelly Roberts, HDFS Clinical Instructor, and Brandt Gardner, HDFS Assistant Professor, were selected to present their research paper at the White House Conference on Research Related to the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.  The conference will be part of the new investigator series for the New Initiatives in Social Services Delivery.

Renee Daugherty, HDFS Assistant Professor and Extension specialist received funding for her grant proposal “Deliberative Forum Framework for Water Issues”.

Carolyn Henry, HDFS Professor, was awarded the “Fathers Count” grant from the Department of Justice, Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  She will work on this grant along with her colleagues Dr. Andrew Behnke of North Carolina State University and Dr. Scott Plunkett from California State University, Northridge.

Two Early Childhood Education faculty members, Joann DesLauriers and Dianna Ross became National board certified teachers through the organization National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The Child Development Lab received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
