Stephen Clarke appointed Nutritional Sciences department head

Dr. Stephen Clarke has been appointed head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the Oklahoma State University College of Human Sciences, it was announced at the January 19 meeting of the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents. Clarke had been serving interim department head since July 2017.  

In addition to his administrative role, Clarke is a professor in nutritional sciences. He joined the department in 2007 after doing post-doctoral study in molecular cardiology at University of Texas Southwest Medical Center. Clarke earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutritional sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research expertise is in phytochemicals and cholesterol, and the impact of iron on metabolic disease.

At OSU, Clarke served as chair of the Faculty Council from 2015-2016 and is currently the university’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the Big 12 Conference. He has received numerous awards and recognition. In 2009, Clarke was presented the College of Human Sciences Outstanding Advisor Award and the OSU Award for Excellence in Advisement. He was also the recipient of the Marguerite Scruggs Award for Early Career Meritorious Research in 2011, and OSU’s Mortar Board Honor Society presented the Golden Torch Award to Clarke in both 2010 and 2012.

In addition to his leadership role in the College of Human Sciences, Clarke serves on the OSU Academic Integrity Panel and the OSU Pre-Health Advisory Committee. He also chairs the OSU Faculty Council’s Retirement and Fringe Benefits committee.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences offers bachelor’s degrees in allied health, community nutrition, dietetics, human nutrition/pre-medical sciences as well as master’s degrees in dietetics and nutrition and a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences.
