EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT: Janna Kelley
Janna Kelley, Pontotoc County Extension, Extension Educator
Janna Kelley serves as Family and Consumer Sciences Educator in Pontotoc County. She has worked for Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service for the past 29 years, havingpreviously served in Haskell County.
Pontotoc County is home to the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation, East Central University and Legal Shield. Ada is the county seat of Pontotoc County which serves as a central shopping district for surrounding counties.
Janna is married to Bryant Kelley who is Director of Mail and Printing at East Central University. They have been married 16 years and enjoy traveling and spend time with family.
Janna received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant in 1985 and she completed her Master of Science Degree from Oklahoma State University in 1998. Upon graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Janna worked for Winn Dixie, a grocery store chain as Head Cashier before joining extension in December of 1987.
Janna was the recipient of the 2015 OCES Distinguished Educator of the Year award. This prestigious award is reserved for educators that show outstanding programing and leadership though out their career. To be eligible for the award an educator much have worked for a minimum of 20 years and held an above average performance appraisal rating.
Janna also was the recipient of the OAEFCS FCS Educator of the Year for 2015 and was also named one of the 2015 Staff Distinguished Serve Award Semi Finalist for Oklahoma State University.
Janna has been involved in many programs throughout her career but her favorite was being involved in a pilot program with the University of Nevada called “All for Kids”. Janna worked with Dr. Deanna Hildebrand to do an in-depth evaluation on the program. The program involved preschoolers, kindergarten students, teachers and parents and educated the students on nutrition, exercise and self-confidence. The five month program entailed a weekly visit to three classes, pre and post evaluations and family events. Janna says her favorite part of working with young children is their enthusiasm to learn and their willingness to try new things.
Janna enjoys working with the Pontotoc County’s Oklahoma Home and Community Education groups. Some of the projects she has guided them in completing are Raising Young Readers, Senior Citizens Resource Fair and annual quilt show. The group was instrumental in helping 250 families in Pontotoc County by helping them being prepared for and emergency by provide emergency preparedness kits.
No matter what hat Janna wears each day, she loves her job even after 29 years. She says it something new every day, every phone call and every visit. That’s what keeps it fun for her and there is never a dull moment.
