Wed, Aug 9, 2017
Dr. Stephen Clarke has been named nutritional sciences interim department head in the College of Human Sciences.
Clarke is succeeding Dr. Nancy Betts who retired July 1 after more than 12 years as NSCI department head. Under her leadership, NSCI undergraduate enrollment increased 63% from 345 to 562 while graduate student enrollment grew 60% from 47 to 75 students. Research awards increased 67% from $2.7M to more than $4.5M. Betts was named an OSU Regents Professor in 2013 and served as the Jim and Lynne Williams Professor prior to her retirement.
Clarke joined the department in 2007 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular cardiology at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutritional sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and his Ph.D. in nutritional sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research is focused on understanding the regulation of cellular iron homeostasis and how iron deficiency alters cellular energy metabolism. He also studies how bioactive food components may play a role in reducing cardiovascular disease risk by affecting cholesterol metabolism and inflammation.
Clarke served as OSU’s Faculty Council chair from 2015-2016 and is currently serving as the OSU Faculty Athletics Representative to the Big 12 Conference.
In 2009 he received the College of Human Sciences Outstanding Advisor Award and the Marguerite Scruggs Award for Early Career Meritorious Research in 2011. OSU’s Mortar Board Honor Society presented the Golden Torch Award to Clarke in 2010, 2012, and 2016.
