NSCI Departmental Graduate Admissions Requirements

PREREQUISITES FOR ADMISSION TO NSCI GRADUATE PROGRAMS:

Prerequisite courses required for full admittance to the PhD program:

  • at least one graduate or undergraduate course in biochemistry*
  • at least one graduate or undergraduate course in physiology*
  • six credit hours of graduate courses in nutrition
  • three credit hours of graduate statistics

*Students should note that two semesters of general chemistry and 1 semester of organic chemistry are typically the prerequisites for biochemistry. The prerequisite for physiology is an introductory biology course.

Students with MS degrees in a subject area other than nutrition will also be required to have a minimum of 30 credit hours of undergraduate/graduate course work related to nutritional sciences, including the prerequisite courses listed above. Applicants who do not meet these requirements may be considered for conditional acceptance and required to take additional prerequisite courses.

If a thesis was not required as a component of the applicant's MS program, a thesis or equivalent must be completed in addition to the requirements for the doctoral degree.

Outstanding students may be considered for admission to the 90 hour PhD program. Please contact the Graduate Coordinator for additional information.

  • at least one course in physiology*
  • at least one upper division nutrition course

Students with a BS degree in a subject area other than nutrition will also be required to have a minimum of 30 credit hours of undergraduate/graduate course work related to nutritional sciences, including the prerequisite courses listed above.

DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT FOR THE NSCI GRADUATE PROGRAMS:

Applicants should submit the following with the online application to the Graduate College:

  • GRE Scores* (OSU’s GRE institution code is 6546)
  • Names and email addresses for three references. References will receive an email requesting completion of a recommendation form.
  • A 2-3 page statement of professional goals and research interests
  • A curriculum vitae
  • International students: TOEFL Score

*For prospective M.S. and Ph.D. students, scores of 150 for each of the quantitative and verbal sections and writing scores of 4.0 or greater are preferred.
A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all undergraduate, graduate, and professional school coursework is required to be considered for full admission.

ADMISSIONS DEADLINES:

July 1 for Fall admission and November 1 for Spring admission.
February 1 for Fall and August 1 for Spring for international students who are not currently in the United States.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS:

Once an application is complete, the NSCI graduate faculty will review the application and make an admission recommendation. This departmental recommendation will be made within about 30 days for M.S. students. For Ph.D. applicants, this recommendation will be made once the application is complete and an advisor and funding source are identified. Ph.D. applicants should review the list of faculty research areas below and contact potential advisors.
