What You Will Learn

Coursework includes retailing, merchandise planning and analysis, sustainable design, profitable merchandising analysis, visual merchandising and communication, market analysis, quality assurance, retail technology, and global sourcing. A required professional internship provides valuable work experience prior to graduation.

Career Opportunities

The merchandising program prepares students for careers at every level of the fashion industry: trend forecasting, textile sales, wholesaling product lines to retailers, retail buyers, managers, visual merchandisers, as well as auxiliary industries including fashion journalism, event planning, and logistics. Merchandising graduates are in high demand among retailers, manufacturers, product developers, supply chain and sourcing managers, and designers.

The OSU Distinction

The fashion merchandising program was ranked #7 nationally by Fashion-Schools.org and #19 on the list of “The Best Fashion Merchandising Schools in the U.S. in 2018” by The Art Career Project.

Internships/Clubs

The Merchandising and Apparel Design Association (MADA) is a department club that promotes fellowship amount students, educates members about career areas, and offers leadership opportunities.

A required professional internship provides valuable work experience prior to graduation.

Facilities 

As a student in the program you will learn software applications and technologies which merchandising professionals use to better understand consumer behavior. For example, technology in the department’s Eye Tracking Lab allows students to better understand how consumers evaluate visual communications such as digital images and videos.

Additionally, students are able to access tools from WGSN, a premier fashion forecasting and planning firm, that are used industry-wide by designers, wholesalers, and retailers.
